Louise Barton Doctoral Coach

Doctoral Programmes Administrator, Doctoral College

Career

In my current role I support PGR students through their academic milestones and provide advice on processes and regulations to academic colleagues. Prior to this I worked at the Open University for 14 years co-ordinating MBA and UG Business Studies programmes. I also managed a team and was part of the senior management team in the Bristol office. I enjoyed supporting my team through a difficult transitional period and this experience helped me to understand more about myself and how to support colleagues in the workplace. I enjoy the diversity of working within H.E as I love meeting people from other cultures and backgrounds.

I am keen to work with doctoral students who are feeling stuck or experiencing feelings of isolation or imposter syndrome. I am interested in helping people with their wellbeing and to avoid burn-out as well as helping them to see the best in themselves. I am a Staff Wellbeing Champion and Menopause Champion and have represented the Doctoral college on the University EDI committee for over 2 years.

Away from work, I spend as much time as possible outside, cycling, swimming or walking. I love the natural world and often feel inspired or have my best ideas when I am surrounded by nature. I enjoy travelling to new places and experiencing different cultures. I also love music, spending time with friends and enjoy playing in a local community samba band.
