Global Talent Fund

Discover why our £4.35m of funding from the Global Talent Fund could be brilliant for your research, career and quality of life.

Funded by the UK Department of Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), and awarded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the £54 million Global Talent Fund has been designed to enable research universities to rapidly recruit and embed teams of international researchers by covering both their relocation and research costs.

The University of Bath is delighted to be one of only 12 UK research-focused higher-education institutions to be awarded a £4.35 million share of the fund. Grants start in the 2025/26 academic year and will run for five years.

With this funding, we plan to recruit up to 15 ambitious, international researchers in four research areas that align with some of our key research strengths and ambitions:

  • Clean-energy industries
  • Digital and technologies
  • Life sciences
  • Professional and business services

This is an exciting opportunity to excel in our research community and become an integral part of our commitment to creating Research with Impact and Innovation with Impact.

Clean-energy industries

We aim to attract global talent to identify opportunities for growing domestic industries, securing trade partnerships, and building resilient supply chains. Key research areas we will target include:

  • AI adoption in clean energy, linking with our digital technologies theme
  • data-driven models for innovation, including AI-enabled data sharing, market modelling, and behavioural analysis
  • financing models that integrate environmental, skills, and productivity goals with manufacturing

Digital and technologies

Our digital research supports the development of scalable, data-driven solutions that boost productivity and public services. These include:

  • AI-driven drug discovery
  • smart energy systems
  • supply chain optimisation

Life sciences

Bath is the UK’s leading centre for pain research, shaping global guidelines for personalised care, especially in paediatric and adolescent pain.

We are investing in augmented human research, combining engineering, physiology, and psychology to develop personalised healthcare technologies for home care and elite sport.

Integrating social sciences ensures robust evaluation and scalability, and we plan to develop our existing research in this area, led by our Institute of the Augmented Human. Additionally, we are expanding work in harm reduction and illicit drug detection, with prototype tools already attracting international interest.

Professional and business services

Our School of Management is internationally recognised for research in entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainable business. We aim to strengthen this area by supporting interdisciplinary research that connects business expertise with technological and scientific innovation in:

  • business services, particularly innovation and technology in retail
  • financial services, with a focus on AI and machine learning in banking, insurance, and auditing
  • advanced manufacturing, especially digitalisation of manufacturing, logistics, and supply chains

A beautiful city

Frequently voted as one of the UK’s most beautiful cities, Bath was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 for its hot springs, Roman archaeology, Georgian buildings, and natural landscape setting. Its good looks have earned the city roles in a number of big- and small-screen productions, including:

  • Netflix’s Bridgerton
  • Wonka (2023)
  • Les Misérables (2012)
  • Pride and Prejudice (2005)
  • Persuasion (2022)
  • Vanity Fair (2004)

A social city

Although Bath's heritage is impressive, the city is far from stuck in the past. The city centre has a variety of restaurants, shops, independent cafes, pubs, theatres, cinemas, museums and parks.

Bath also hosts an array of festivals and events, so there's always something going on.

If you love the outdoors, you can hire a bike and follow one of the local cycling paths, or follow the Bath Skyline Walk, which offers spectacular views over the city.

A well-connected city

Bath is very well-connected by train, and you can reach the following cities in two hours or less:

  • Bristol – 15 minutes
  • Cardiff – just over an hour
  • London – one hour and 20 minutes
  • Birmingham – two hours

You can drive to Bristol Airport in less than an hour or catch a coach directly from the city centre to Heathrow Airport in less than two and a half hours.
